If you ask a friend of mine to name a few words that they could use to describe me, chances are geek would be in there. There’s a couple of things in this world that geeks seem to be attracted to: monkeys, robots, and the subject for this post – zombies. Recently Lucy and I tried something a bit different. We went to a tea party. A tea party filled with the living dead feasting on human heart cakes.

For a while now Lucy has been keen to go to one of Miss Sue Flay’s Secluded Tea Parties. When she saw that a zombie themed one was coming up, she decided it was time to finally make sure we went to one. So we purchased our tickets and started planning our costumes. Originally we were planning on going with a Plants vs Zombies theme but we decided that was a little too much work for a Friday evening. So we settled for the good ol’ zombie & survivor combination. We put on our best zombie getup and headed off to the Apocalypse Paintball site, just outside of Royston.

The journey was certainly eventful. The sat nav had taken us nowhere near the venue and then upon finding the right road, it was closed due to a traffic collision. After a bit of stressing out, we finally arrived. At first we weren’t sure if we had the right place. Until we hit the guy in the gas mask & combat gear maning the road. From there we were directed to the car park where we awaited entry to the “safe zone”. As we waited by the gate decorated with barbed wire & severed zombie limbs, a few more colorful costumes turned up. That’s when all hell broke loose. It started with the whirring of a chainsaw and it was shortly followed by our poor parking attendent being piled to the ground by an approaching zombie hoard. Thankfully the gate swung open and we were welcomed into the safe zone with the other costumed guests.

The rest of the evening was a little more relaxed thankfully. There was some excellent costumes and some even better company. The tea was free flowing and in a variety of different tasty flavours (including Chai, Lucy’s favourite). And then there was the cake. If the event could be summed up by one picture then it would have to be one of the boxes of cakes that we were each given:

There was a:

Black Forest, human heart cupcake

Chocolate brownie grave complete with gravestone

Tasty jam filled. skull topped cupcake

Freaky eyeball cake pop

The cake was followed by a zombie quiz given by our zombie expert Sean T Page (aided by his lovely wife). It was a closely fought contest but we came out top thanks to Chuck Norris. He was in our tie breaking zombie survival posse of himself (martial artist), Katie Price (bait), Florence Nightingale (war hardened nursing skills) and Bill Bailey (comedy & music). So a big thanks to Sean for putting that on and our prize of a copy of Pride, Prejudice & Zombies along with a poster of Sean’s book The Offiical Zombie Handbook (UK). Finally we topped off a great night with a great flick: Zombieland.

It was an allround superb event and a big thanks to Jo aka Miss Sue Flay for organising it all. We’ll certainly be attending another of her tea parties in the future and I believe that she’s got ideas for another indie event like this one already spinning around in her head. More info on the tea parties can be found at http://thesecludedteapartyshhh.blogspot.com/
